To Assist New Nominees

Tools for the Nominating Committee to offer potential nominees. (06/22/07)

It is important during the nominating process to help each potential nominee understand the nature of job she or he is considering, and to ascertain clearness for accepting the particular proposed responsibility.  To that end, the Yearly Meeting provides two tools for the Nominating Committee to offer potential nominees.

Job Description:  It is the Nominating Committee's role to provide job descriptions at the appropriate time in the nominating process.  The following minute addresses this in particular:

IMYM 03-08 "The Nominating Committee will provide each nominee with the position description and responsibilities from the current IMYM Guide to Operations, and the name and contact information for person or persons most recently in the position.  This information should be provided to the nominee as soon as possible after she or he has been selected by the Nominating Committee."

The following two paragraphs can be copied into correspondence when contacting potential nominees:

Job descriptions for nearly all the Yearly Meeting's committees, clerks, coordinators and other positions are posted as web pages on imym.org under the Guide to Operations.  These descriptions are adapted from the 1998 Guide, updated for approved procedural changes (minuted by IMYM or the Continuing Committee) and current practices, where known.  While many pages contain questions about current practice, missing information, inconsistencies, etc., they represent our best description of what people in the Yearly Meeting have grown to expect from its officers and committees.

To get to a job description, go to http://imym.org and click on the Guide to Operations button on the Site Contents menu on the left.  Only a few more clicks should take you to your job description.  Email Cynthia Smith (cjs@manzanasprings.com) if you have problems or questions.

Clearness Process for Nominations:  Minute IMYM 03-08 describes a clearness process that a potential nominee should follow within her or his own monthly meeting before agreeing to proceed forward with the nomination.  While this process has not been widely adopted, it remains a valuable tool for those Friends who do not feel clearness about a nomination.  The process may be particularly useful for nominees to positions with major commitments and demands, e.g., youth program leaders, clerks, registrars, operations coordinators, etc.  This process is described in the Guide under Appointments.
