Clearness Process for IMYM Nominations
Approved as Minute IMYM 03-08.
The IMYM Nominating Committee considers it important to establish a stronger process for seasoning its nominees for service to the Yearly Meeting. The rightness of the relationship of one proposed to serve and the needs of the Yearly Meeting should consider a Friend’s spiritual growth and circumstances that might affect the Friend’s ability to serve. It is the hope of the Nominating Committee that this process will enhance the connection between Monthly Meetings and the Yearly Meeting.
The Committee asks that each of its nominees request a clearness committee from their local Monthly Meeting or Worship Group to discern the answers to the following questions:
1. How does this position relate to your spiritual leading into service? What spiritual support might you need from your Meeting?
2. Given the duties of the job and your personal attributes and abilities, is it a good match? How does it fit your gifts? Does it offer you potential for personal growth?
3. What circumstances might affect your ability to serve? What are you commitments within and outside of your Meeting? Will they interfere?
4. What assistance will you need from your Meeting to perform the duties of the job? Examples: Will you need to have the Meeting host Committee gatherings? Do you have duties within your own Meeting that will need to be laid down or assumed by others? Might you need help from your Meeting to meet childcare or other domestic responsibilities if travel is involved?
To assist in this discernment, the Nominating Committee will provide the nominee with the position description and responsibilities from the current IMYM Guide to Operations, and the name and contact information for person or persons most recently in the position. This information should be provided to the nominees as soon as possible after they have been selected by the Committee.
The results of the clearness process are to be reported to the Nominating Committee by the date requested so the Committee can consider other options should the nomination of the person under consideration not be advisable. The intention and hope of this Minute is that, if possible, Friends will participate in a clearness process before nominations come to the IMYM Meeting for Business in June for final approval.
